Scale (Meezan in Farsi) is a sensory ethnographic film that immerses viewers in the life of a coastal village in southwestern Iran, near the Iran-Iraq border. Once the center of the oil industry, this village has transformed into a refuge and supply point for those displaced by the Iran-Iraq War. Here, daily life revolves around the cyclical rhythm of leaving for and returning from the sea. The film is structured in three parts. The first follows the daily life aboard an Arab fisherman's boat, where the crew spends 20 days each month at sea. Individual histories are interwoven with scenes of fishing, cleaning, and eating on board. The second part captures the bustling activity at the Barakan docks, where fishermen distribute and auction their catch. The third provides an intimate glimpse into a shrimp factory on the outskirts of Abadan, where women, forming the majority of the workforce, hand-shell shrimp as part of their daily routine and livelihood. As the film explores these lives, it pays equal attention to the sounds and visual images that define their spaces—the hum of daily activities, the clatter of tools, and the ambient noises that fill their world. Through Scale, Shahab Mihandoust once again turns his lens toward often overlooked or disappearing lives within these spaces, bringing the people who inhabit them into sharp focus.
