Synopsis

The young Iranian Melina lives with her grandparents because neither of her divorced parents is willing to take her in. Turning nine, Melina is legally coming of age and considers opening her custody case in court.

Grand Me masterfully weaves together an extraordinary protagonist, a complex family drama reflecting societal contradictions, and a cinematic language that is both authentic and innovative. In her feature debut, director Atiye Zare Arandi follows her candid and spirited 9-year-old niece, Melina, as she poses fundamental questions about family and care. Living with her grandparents following her parents' divorce, Melina boldly files a custody lawsuit against her parents, seeking to live with her mother. However, the adult-centric world proves unyielding to the young girl's desires. The film deftly captures Melina's range of emotions, from disappointment and anger towards her parents to tender moments shared with her caring grandparents. It skillfully portrays the emotional journey of a child who has grasped life's sorrows prematurely. The camera's intimate perspective doesn't stem from Melina's familial tie to the director, but rather from the profound respect shown to Melina as an individual and the director's nurturing encouragement for her to confront her parents and their reality. In essence, the director's camera becomes an additional protective presence for Melina.
