Synopsis

In this lm, director TAE Jun-seek once again addresses the irregularities and contradictions found in the Korean society. This time he targets the group of three nepotistic newspapers in Korea commonly known as ‘Cho-Joong-Dong’. Korea’s media is even dubbed as the fourth power for its role as the government’s watchdog agency serving public interests. However, what are the realities of Korean media? This lm begins with a 2012 report of an impending typhoon from a Korean newspaper, which was accompanied by some photos of the weather conditions in the Korean peninsula. They said the newspaper was indeed the quickest to deliver the news but it was soon revealed that the photos used had been taken from another typhoon a few years ago. Are false reports like this merely mistakes? From the start, the director points out that the key characteristic of false reports lies in establishing themselves as facts. He keenly examines the ways in which the Korean media, under the grip of huge capital and power population, has manipulated popular opinion to achieve its own interest. Firstly, he looks at the real estate business. The media has encouraged speculation in real estate by falsely making the views of the nepotistic newspapers seem like those of the market. Of course, the benets of the whole situation were theirs to take in the end. Second, the director focuses on the media’s witch-hunt against ROH Moo-hyun, the former president of Korea who had been critical of media. Seen as a despicable lawbreaker in the eyes of the public through the media’s haphazard and unfounded reports against him, he an extreme choice. Lastly, the lm considers the power that lies with Samsung. Samsung has emerged as an absolute power by using all its capital and media to silence all negative public sentiments against it. What should we do in this reality where the media has lost its critical role and has long become privatized? What sage solutions are there? The lm ends with questions for us to answer. What do we have to do? (MAENG Soo-jin)
