Wang Binyu observes his sister Jiao awaiting childbirth in a pink maternity room. While Jiao waits for delivery in the pink obstetric ward, speculations and expectations of four generations of women surrounding the unborn child are depicted. Particularly, the earnest wishes of mother and grandmother hoping for a son collide with Jiao's physical pain and the indelible memories embedded within. The film captures the quiet time of childbirth without movement through long-take format. Even within minimal direction, it delicately portrays a journey containing change, solitude, and the depth of women's narrative.

Set within a delivery room painted entirely in pink, About the Pink Cocoon unfolds as a four-generation chronicle of painful family memories. Even before giving birth, the mother sleeps, exhausted as if by decree. With the arrival of the child comes a dual inheritance: the miracle of life, and the weight of societal expectations. This is a story of the gentleness, secrecy, intimacy, and solidarity that define a woman’s world. It traces a lineage of quiet struggle passed down through generations, while questioning the persistent machinery of exclusion and injustice.

In 2022, I turned my camera to the women in my family. As the youngest child, I started a conversation with my second eldest sister Jiao, who has been the victim of son preference since birth. Intentionally and unintentionally neglected and unsupported, she transformed her frustration and grievance into rebellion. Jiao regarded me as an enemy since childhood and rebelled against our mother and grandmother who were deeply obsessed with having a son… Expecting her own baby, Jiao hopes to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and embrace the next generation with love and care.
