Essay is not a closed system that defines a fixed genre. Drawing on the many auteurist forms cinema has accumulated, the section presents documentaries closer to thought experiments, works that continually provoke and renew perception and reflection. Rather than proving objective truths, these films inscribe the trajectory of thought on screen; rather than offering closed narratives, they record the movement by which questions take shape. Contemporary essay films do not describe the world in linear terms but organize new sensations and meanings in the gaps where image and sound, memory and history, the personal and the social collide.
This year’s Essay section brings together cinematic voices from around the world, each describing the world in a style of their own. They do not reduce history and politics, cities and landscapes, labor and art to grand discourses. Instead, they follow family memories and everyday conversations, an actor’s gestures and the process of making, digital images and chance encounters, rewriting the world in their own idiom. Beginning from personal sensibility, these explorations bring us face to face anew with wounds and love, identity and power, and the layers of memory. The section becomes a cinematic site where complex yet supple ways of looking at the world collide and resonate.
