Frontier, a competition running parallel to the International Competition and devoted to new international documentaries, seeks to present original approaches in contemporary documentary cinema. The eight selected films answer the program’s ideal of an evolving, self-renewing medium, drawing attention to the originality of their forms as much as to the subjects they address. What decides a film’s place here is therefore not polished craft but each filmmaker’s perspective and attitude toward the documentary medium. Underlying this selection is the belief that content and position—cultural, artistic, and political questions alike—take on greater meaning only through their interaction with artistic form.
This year’s Frontier introduces perspectives that venture into documentary storytelling, test the limits of convention, and redefine the relationship between record and reality. Across essays, road movies, found footage, fictional reimaginings of history, musical reconstruction, and compelling forms of dialogue, no trace of habit remains. We hope these frontiers of our time will evoke the contemporary context of documentary practice, engage with sociopolitical currents, and bring the pleasure of discovery across many eras, languages, and styles.
