Frontier Competition showcases feature films that embody the spirit of modern, adventurous documentary filmmaking. This year's selection comprises nine competing films, each representing a unique universe of novel subjects, radical styles, and boundary-breaking narratives that defy easy categorization. Frontier Competition is the platform where audiences can explore the latest trends in nonfiction film and discover innovative audiovisual practices in global documentary. We seek films that intertwine the boundaries of visual experimentation and complex audiovisual experiences in innovative ways. These works include formally groundbreaking projects that embrace deep reflection, introspection, and confrontation. They offer original interpretations of the observational documentary form, explore the blurred line between fiction and nonfiction, and challenge traditional hierarchies in filmmaking. Moreover, they propose inventive ideas about the roles of image and sound. We anticipate that these films, with their boundary-pushing expressions and heterodox approaches, will test the limits of documentary filmmaking and challenge established tastes. Their artistic visions are full of emotion, authenticity, and inspiration. In their quest for expressive autonomy and independence, we hope that Frontier Competition will initiate a dialogue that transcends the time-honored traditions of documentary film, embracing bold and innovative proposals. All films featured in the Frontier Competition will have their Asian premieres during the festival.
