The struggle to establish trade unions, the fight for peasant survival rights, anti-colonial resistance, the landscapes of gig economy work, the quest to overcome trauma from violence, and the warmth of care in an increasingly cold world - these are the critical themes that the 2024 International Competition delves into. These films document struggles for solidarity on one hand, and on the other, they reflect a profound commitment to uncovering truth and navigating contradictions in their own distinct ways. The selected films serve as a powerful reminder that documentarians dedicated to recording, discovering, and bettering the world are continuously confronting war, disease, hatred, absurdity, and violence. These filmmakers are striving to transcend the challenges of our turbulent times through labor and ecological activism. After careful deliberation by the program selection committee, the International Competition, which honors the diverse approaches, styles, trends, and perspectives of traditional documentary filmmaking, has been distilled down to ten exceptional films. In a world increasingly defined by discrimination, accusations, disputes, and confrontations, we are confident that these films, each committed to both practical and artistic purification, will leave an indelible impression. Moreover, they will invite audiences to engage with the world and the art of cinema through their honest exploration of reality. All the works in the International Competition will have their Asian premieres during this festival.
