The year 2023, when the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival (DMZ Docs) celebrates its 15th anniversary, is a year of change. The program selection committee reorganized the overseas competition, which was previously divided into international competition and Asian competition, to divide it into international competition and frontier, to explore the future based on the rich history and tradition of documentary films. In the International Competition, films that are faithful to the unique virtues and values of documentary films that expose reality and explore the truth were selected and in the Frontier competiton, works dedicated to aesthetic adventures and new cinematic visions that challenge the inertia of documentary films were selected. Documentarists from around the world met through the exhibited works have been addressing political and social issues of the time while documenting, discovering, and challenging taboos. Through ten selected works, the audience will be able to meet works that shed light on the violence created by the contemporary reality stained by war, as well as various works dealing with issues of borders and migration. At the same time, you will enjoy watching documentaries that shed light on the stories of extraordinary people and the realities of hard–to–reach places, and confirming that the tradition of private documentary, which seeks to reflect on individual experiences and histories and to connect with social contexts, continues to evolve, The program selection committee believes that those films will affirm the conviction that documentary films will enable conversations and debates to continue in a world increasingly savaged by discrimination, condemnation, and hatred.
