SYNOPSIS
In Profiles Farmers: Daily Life, the second chapter of the Profiles Farmers trilogy, we meet the same farmers again four years later. Farms are becoming second homes, while only a few young people take over. The challenges of passing on their heritage affect their everyday lives.
REVIEW
A bridge within the Profiles Farmers series, Daily Life captures the countryside as it changes through the passage of time. Raymond Depardon reunites with people he filmed before, shaping their hardships and the relentless course of time into a moving chronicle. Since Profiles Farmers: The Approach, some have died and others have grown frail. Their places are increasingly taken by younger outsiders who visit country homes for leisure or take up farming as a hobby. The resulting question of who will inherit and continue the farms weighs heavily on rural life.
Also an exploration of human faces and landscapes, Profiles Farmers: Daily Life embraces the harsh realities confronting contemporary farmers with deep affection while contemplating the irreversible movement of the times with composure. Depardon neither rushes to impose a message nor judges or denounces in advance; he maintains the humility of an observer. Yet resignation does not dominate the film. Reflecting on his own past as a farmer’s son and reaffirming his attachment to the land, he records a world disappearing before his eyes. In doing so, he pays tribute to all the men and women of the countryside who risk sinking into the depths of oblivion.
