Set in Metropolitan Hospital's emergency rooms and outpatient clinics, this film offers an unflinching view of hospital life. Frederick Wiseman’s Hospital is one of his most spiritually resonant works. From its opening shot—a patient standing with arms outstretched like a figure on a crucifix—to its final image of chapel hymns drifting over a city street, the film hums with a quiet religious undercurrent. Centered on the emergency room and outpatient clinics of New York’s Metropolitan Hospital, it captures a vivid cross-section of humanity: a young Black man covered in blood, holding hands with his girlfriend; an elderly patient hesitating before a nurse; a doctor protesting another hospital’s decision; a janitor on his rounds. 

What emerges is a deep, abiding empathy for those working on the front lines of an impersonal system. The film is not simply about modern medicine, poverty, or public health disparities; it is about the daily struggle, against long odds, to ease the suffering of others. Wiseman’s editing and framing invite us to contemplate why these workers persist, and why they sometimes inevitably fail.
